One day, told properly
You wake before the alarm. It's cold in a way you didn't expect Africa to be cold, and there's woodsmoke and wet grass coming through the canvas.
Someone has left coffee outside your tent. You don't know when.
By six you're on the crater rim and there's nothing below you but cloud, a white lake filling a bowl eighteen kilometres across. Your guide cuts the engine. He does this often. By the end of the week you'll understand that the moments he switches the engine off are the ones you keep.
Then the cloud begins to move.
An hour later you're on the crater floor and a lioness walks past your door at the distance of a handshake. Nobody speaks. Afterwards somebody laughs, that shaky laugh people make when something has been slightly too much.
You'll take photographs. They won't work. That's alright. Nobody's ever do.

Lorai was raised inside Maasai tradition, and he doesn't perform it for visitors, he simply lives it, and lets you stand close enough to feel it. Spend a day with him and something shifts: you stop watching Tanzania and start feeling it, the way he does.

Julius was born in a village on the edge of the Serengeti, close enough that the plains were his childhood backyard. He reads a print in the dust the way you'd read a name, one glance, and he knows which of the Big Five passed, and roughly how long ago.

Things we'd rather you heard from us
The Ngorongoro crater floor fills with vehicles by mid-morning. We descend at six, you'll beat roughly nine in ten others down there, but it does mean an early start.
Most operators force a twelve-hour day on your last stretch through the highlands, Serengeti, down the crater, all the way to Arusha, in one push. We stay a night on the crater rim instead. It's a better night. It also costs one more night's accommodation.
