When
January โ March
Where
Kilimanjaro National Park, Northern Tanzania
Duration
7 โ 9 day ascent
January to March is widely regarded as the finest window to summit Kilimanjaro. The long rains have passed. The skies clear. The summit glaciers catch the light of a thousand photographs. For serious trekkers and bucket-list climbers alike, this is when the mountain is at its most photogenic and its most forgiving.
The conditions at altitude are cold โ temperatures at the summit routinely drop to โ15ยฐC at night โ but the days are crisp, the visibility extraordinary, and the absence of the heavy cloud that characterises the rainy months transforms the experience. Standing at Uhuru Peak in January, looking south over a sea of cloud lit by sunrise, is one of the great views in Africa.
Mboka's Lemosho Route departures during this season are particularly sought after. Eight days, gradual acclimatisation, and a summit attempt in the window of 2โ4am when the weather is typically at its most stable and the stars are still visible overhead. Book early โ January to March slots fill four to six months in advance.
